Biography
Janet Harris has 40 years of nursing experience – most of which has been in management and administration. She worked for over 8 years as a national consultant for Cardinal Health and served as the National Director of Nursing Professional Services. Janet returned to the University of Mississippi in 2007 as the Chief Nursing Executive Officer and served in that capacity for 8 years; during that period she also served for 18 months as the interim CEO. She joined the faculty of the School of Nursing full time in September and serves as Professor and Associate Dean for Practice and Community Engagement. In January 2015 Janet assumed the role of Director of the DNP Program. Janet obtained for BSN and MSN from the UMMC School of Nursing and completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in the Executive Track at the University of Pittsburgh.
Active for many years in community and professional organizations, Janet served four years on the Congress of Nursing Practice and Economics and as a Magnet Commissioner with the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center. She is a past President of the Mississippi Nurses’ Association and the Mississippi Nurses’ Foundation. She has been active in AONE serving on the Bylaws Committee, Patient Care Delivery Model Task Force, Patient Safety Committee, Institute Operations Committee, and Hospital Pursuit of Excellence Committee. She served for 3 years as a Commissioner on the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. She is also a board member for the Greater Jackson Community Foundation and the March of Dimes. She was recently elected as President-elect of the Mississippi Organization of Nurse Executives.
