Biography

Dr. Fernando Gomez is a board-certified physician in both Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine, currently serving as Division Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). A first-generation Cuban-Mexican American, Dr. Gomez was born in Queens, New York, and relocated to the South over 20 years ago. After earning a medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Gomez completed a Pediatrics residency at UMMC, followed by several years as a pediatric attending physician. Motivated by a passion for acute care and complex decision-making, they returned to training to complete a second residency in Emergency Medicine, also at UMMC.

Dr. Gomez has since developed a robust clinical and academic career focused on improving pediatric emergency care through quality improvement, simulation-based training, and system-wide education initiatives. Their work spans both pediatric and adult emergency departments, and they are deeply involved in faculty development, resident education, and statewide trauma and EMS advisory committees. Dr. Gomez brings a unique perspective shaped by personal and professional diversity, with a deep commitment to inclusive, high-quality care and teaching.
