Biography
Dr Famuyide joined the UMMC Newborn Medicine faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2008 and became an Associate Professor in 2014. She served her Pediatric residency at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and her Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. She was awarded a Master of Public Health from Jackson State University in 2002 and a Master of Arts in Bioethics in 2013 from Loyola University, Chicago. She has been selected and participated in a number of faculty development initiatives through the Association of American Medical Colleges.
She was the Pediatric Physician Champion on the team that diligently worked on implementing the 10-steps to breast feeding that was instrumental to the achievement of the Baby Friendly Designation by the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). In addition to her advocacy and administrative efforts in the field of breastfeeding, she is a health services and community participatory researcher and has been funded since 2015 by the Community Foundation of North Mississippi through a WK Kellogg Foundation grant to develop and implement a breastfeeding promotion and support initiative in the Mississippi Delta. She continues to support quality improvement initiatives statewide to promote breastfeeding as a modality to reduce infant mortality.
Dr. Famuyide is a core faculty member at the UMMC Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities and has presented at national conferences on bioethics education. Most recently on the ethics knowledge of residents in Pediatrics. She coordinates a UMMC lecture series for pediatric residents based on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) bioethics curriculum and teaches Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Students and Medical Students on topics related to ethics and decision making. The AAP bioethics curriculum series provide pediatric residents with opportunities to improve skills in ethical awareness and decision-making. She has examined the ethics knowledge and attitude of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners in the State and is exploring the same in a nationally representative sample. She is the principal investigator at UMMC for the Investigating Neonatal Decisions for Extremely Early Deliveries (INDEED) study, a multicenter collaborative examining the clinical courses of mothers and their newborns born in the ethical “grey zone” of 22-24 weeks gestation.
She is the site principal investigator for a number of neonatal clinical trials and represents the UMMC site of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded Institutional Development Award (IDeA) States Pediatric Clinical Trials Network (ISPCTN) as a co-investigator on the Peri-Pre- and Postnatal Workgroup.
As an advocate for neurodevelopmental interventions in the NICU, she leads a multidisciplinary group engaged in this effort and has been instrumental in the introduction of interventions and integration of therapists in the NICU at UMMC to support neurodevelopment. She serves as the District Coordinator for the First Steps Early Intervention Program at the Children’s Hospital, one of a few such integrated programs nationwide.
This includes encouraging the involvement of parents as partners during the NICU stay and the introduction of the to engage and integrate parents into the activities of the NICU.
Dr. Famuyide’s research work is complemented by her clinical quality improvement (QI) work. At UMMC she was instrumental to the establishment of the UMMC NICU Family Advisory Board and Parent Resource Meetings, two parent focused/led programs to support a family centered model of care. She co-chairs the Family support/engagement team of the Mississippi Perinatal Quality Collaborative. The team is working on best practice bundles to promote family engagement and support in all NICUs across the state. She models community-related, physician advocacy of child health through such efforts as serving on the board and as the Co-Medical Director of the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Mississippi.
Although Dr Famuyide enjoys her research, QI, community and teaching efforts, "nothing can replace the hands on work at the bedside with the most fragile babies in the NICU".
