Biography
Kristin Shirey Edwards, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Director of the Mitochondrial Research Core at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She earned her B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Jacksonville State University and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she also completed postdoctoral training in physiology and biophysics.
Dr. Edwards' research focuses on mitochondrial dysfunction in metabolic and inflammatory diseases, including polycystic ovary syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and cardiovascular complications. Her work integrates biochemical, physiological, and translational approaches and has been supported by NIH and institutional funding.
She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented nationally and internationally. In addition to her research, Dr. Edwards is an active educator, teaching pharmacology and biochemical methods while mentoring undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral trainees. She is committed to promoting diversity in science and previously served on the executive board of UMMC’s Group on Women in Medicine and Science.
Dr. Edwards is a member of several scientific societies and serves as a reviewer for NIH study sections and leading journals. Her contributions support innovation in mitochondrial medicine and scientific training.
