Biography

Dr. Lorena M. Amaral is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Dr. Amaral is member of American Heart Association (AHA), American Physiological Society (APS), American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), Society for Reproductive Investigation (SRI) and Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM). She has served as ad-hoc member on grant review panels for the American Heart Association. She has also served as peer-reviewer for over 10 international scientific journal such as BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, Circulation, Heliyon, PLOS, Hypertension, among others. Also, she has served as guest editor for international scientific journal. In addition, she has provided service as a scientific judge in several local science fairs.

Dr. Amaral has authored over 65 peer-reviewed papers on diverse topics of hypertensive pregnancy disorder research and sent over 70 abstracts to national/international scientific meetings. Her research has been funded by agencies from Brazil and United States. She has received several awards such as Career Development Award (CDA-AHA), Caroline tum Suden/Hellebrandt Professional Opportunity Award (APS) and the most outstanding basic science oral presentation in relation to the study of hypertension in pregnancy from ISSHP.

She serves in multiple leadership capacities, including Associate Program Director and MFM track, Master in Clinical Science Investigation, UMMC; GWIMS mentoring chair and secretary; Pharmacology Graduate Admission Committee-Member, Pharmacology Department; SOM Curriculum Foundation Science-Member; SOM- Curriculum Program Evaluation Subcommittee-Member, UMMC; PhD and Master advisory committee, UMMC; Master in Clinical Science admission committee-member. Over the past few years, she has mentored graduate students, M.D fellows and served as PI or Co-investigator on a number of clinical and basic science research grants that have investigated preeclampsia and gestational hypertension.

Dr. Amaral’s research is focused on translational studies investigating novel therapeutic targets for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
