Drs. Suthin and Somprasong Songcharoen’s philanthropy will expand hand, nerve and upper extremity surgical care for children and adults, research and international collaboration at the Medical Center. Dr. Marc Walker, associate professor of plastic surgery and orthopaedic surgery, will lead the center as the Songcharoen Endowed Chair of Plastic and Reconstructive Hand Surgery.

The Mississippi Children’s Museum is helping the University of Mississippi Medical Center and its pediatric arm, Children’s of Mississippi, spread the joy of books through Reach Out and Read, a national program that supports early parent-child relationships through reading. The project will put books in physicians’ hands for well-child visits so they can encourage parents to read to their young children.

Staying on alert for bad weather doesn’t always end in spring for those with diabetes, asthma or other conditions that sometimes require using electrical medical equipment. Emergency officials in the state start an awareness effort this week to help keep such patients and others safe.

Depression and anxiety can affect mothers before and after the birth of their babies. To make sure they have access to mental health resources, a CHAMP for Moms program has been launched as a resource to pediatric and OB-GYN providers in the state.
