Effects of an Exclusive Human Milk Diet on Enteral Feeding Outcomes of Neonates with Congenital Gastrointestinal Disorders

About this Study

This study will identify whether an exclusive human milk diet (EHMD) would improve outcomes in patients with congenital gastrointestinal disorders (CGD) by facilitating an earlier transition off of parental nutrition (PN) when compared to the current standard of a partial human milk or exclusive formula diets.

Inclusion Criteria
  1. Admission to participating NICU at less than 7 days of age
  2. Birthweight >1250g and/or gestational age at birth >32 weeks
  3. Less than 7 days of enteral feedings
  4. No formula feedings after diagnosis of CGD has been made*
  5. Diagnosis of eligible primary “Congenital Gastrointestinal Disorders” defined as: gastroschisis, omphalocele and intestinal atresias
  6. Consent to the use of PDM products
  7. Consent to participate in this study
  8. Subject has Legally Authorized Representative(s)/caregiver(s) who agree not to post any of the subject’s personal medical data or information related to the study on the internet, including but not limited to any website, blog, forum or social media (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) until notified that the study has been completed.

Exclusion Criteria
  1. Admission to participating NICU at >7 days of age
  2. Birthweight
  3. Diagnosis of non-eligible gastrointestinal disorders: congenital diaphragmatic hernia, midgut volvulus, Hirschsprung’s disease, esophageal atresia, imperforate anus
  4. Evidence of significant liver dysfunction at time of enrollment (direct bilirubin >4 and transaminases elevated more than 2 SD above upper limit of normal for age)
  5. Known liver malformations such as biliary atresia and choledochal cyst
  6. Refusal of consent

* Infants with intestinal atresias often receive formula feeds before the diagnosis is made.
