Broadway Shines Bright – for 55 Years
Fifty-five years ago, in July 1971, the Apollo 15 lunar mission launched, 18-year-olds could finally vote thanks to the 26th Amendment, and Verlyne Broadway started her career with the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

A lot has changed in the past 55 years, but Ms. Broadway’s commitment to the Medical Center hasn’t. She’s held several different positions over that time, including stints in patient care and support roles, with the last 13+ years in the sterile processing unit. She’s never worked anywhere else in her life – an enormously inspiring rarity in these days of job changes. Her love of the Medical Center is evident in her dedication to a more-than-half-a-century-long career here.
Earlier this week, I presented Ms. Broadway with a plaque to recognize her service. She will also get a 55-year pin when it’s ready. We had to get it specially designed for her because it was a first! This much-deserved recognition was a joyful moment.
This service milestone pairs nicely with last week’s national health care workforce ranking by Forbes that placed us #2 in the country. If you enjoy the work you are doing, where and with whom you are doing it and feel it makes a difference, you can find fulfillment in your job. I believe we have a great UMMC family; we have an important and rewarding mission, and this really is a great place to work. Just ask Ms. Broadway, who, for longer than anyone else at UMMC, has been a part of the cause of A Healthier Mississippi.
