Physician Leaders

Good morning.

Today, I want to recognize those of us who stand closest to the intersection of science and compassion – our physicians.

This past Tuesday was National Doctor’s Day. The American Medical Association says the annual observance is an opportunity to “… honor the dedication, skill and unwavering commitment of physicians in providing high-quality health care to individuals and communities…”. That is a fitting description, and that happens every day in a variety of settings. But I also want to add another layer of what our physicians bring to the patients and their families - humanity. They provide more than treatment; they deliver care for our patients and their families during some of life’s most challenging moments.

Dr. Jarrett Morgan, associate professor of medicine, talks with patient Easton McBrayer, 16. Morgan was recently awarded the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award in recognition of his clinical excellence and outstanding compassion in the delivery of care.I’m proud of how physicians who lead our care teams treat our patients with compassion. Our doctors see more than just a medical chart or a diagnosis; they engage with a person who brings with them a whole life, a set of experiences and worries and fears but also hope. It’s that hope that our doctors most influence when they treat a patient with humanity and humility. Education and training teach us the science of health care and what can and/or should be done. Experience and compassion instill a sense of the WHO and the WHY. When we treat the whole person, we provide comfort and earn trust. I am grateful for all of you who do this every day without thinking – it is second nature. I hear the gratitude from our patients and their families in their stories of how well cared for they were by you. It’s about more than the medical expertise – it’s always also about the kindness, caring, listening and compassion shown to them.

Each year during the UMMC School of Medicine’s white coat ceremony for first-year students, they read the Oath of Hippocrates. This line in it pairs nicely with today’s VC Notes topic:

“That I will lead my life and practice my art in uprightness and honor;”

Our physicians honor me, you and everyone who wears a UMMC badge. In doing their work, they honor their patients. To our doctors, I extend my appreciation for your commitment to the healing arts and for your dedication to Mississippians. You are the flag bearers in our battle for A Healthier Mississippi.

Signed, Lou Ann Woodward, M.D.
