Leadership Training
Good morning.
In strategy five of the UMMC 2030 Strategic Plan, Optimize Institutional Service Areas, we are focusing on the support systems and operational structures that help our institution run and succeed. A goal under this strategy this year is Ensure Workforce Professionalism, Skills and Customer Service. We want to instill confidence and consistency; qualities our various customer groups expect from us – and we should expect from ourselves. This includes our managers and supervisors. They should set the standard for their teams and serve as examples of excellence. Leaders have to know how to set expectations for staff and hold their teams accountable.
To set the bar and ensure all our managers know the expectations, Human Resources kicked off a series of training sessions this week for all the Medical Center’s leaders. The main premise of this training is to establish a management proficiency baseline and set the expectations for managers on how they model, supervise and coach employees regarding culture and accountability.
Once all leaders go through the training, we will have taken a massive step toward our goal of “service excellence” as an overall culture. And, importantly, the institution can be assured that leaders will have the tools needed to manage their staff and will be held accountable as such. It’s a manager’s responsibility to communicate UMMC expectations and policies to their staff and track compliance. Examples include the policies on professional appearance, attendance, remote work and use of personal devices. If this responsibility isn’t fulfilled, a supervisor must also be held accountable by upline management, including with formal corrective action steps.
How we present ourselves to patients, students, visitors, families, colleagues and anyone who engages with UMMC services is important and should reflect the high level of quality of the education, research and patient care that happen here every day. A culture of excellence is necessary across all areas of the Medical Center if we are going to move forward in our journey to A Healthier Mississippi.
