After directing the state’s response to the COVID pandemic and addressing health inequities as head of the Mississippi Department of Health, Dr. Thomas Dobbs, new dean of population health, wants the school to be a force for ‘driving, inducing, catalyzing change.’

Of all the questions educators consider when teaching their courses – “what?” “when?” “where?” “why?” and “for whom?” – there is one that sometimes gets short shrift: “how?” But now, thanks to the impetus of a reorganized department at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the shrift of “how” will become a lot longer.

Juniors in the traditional BSN program at the School of Nursing at UMMC wore their white coats for the first time Tuesday. Now the 102 members of the School of Nursing’s Class of 2024 have stepped into the clinical part of their nursing education.

If you’re a high school football player, chances are you’re going to suffer some type injury during that time. The Medical Center gives parents and players peace of mind by offering a late-night Friday clinic to assess and treat injuries ranging from fractures to concussions to bumps and bruises.

Whether there’s a pandemic or not, flu will still be the menace that can sideline you for weeks or at the least, make you feel rotten. The Medical Center has scheduled plenty of opportunities for students, employees and volunteer to get the mandatory flu vaccine. And remember: it takes two weeks for the vaccine’s antibodies to kick in, so plan your protection.

The 2021 Sanderson Farms Championship winner, ranked 12th in Official World Golf Rankings, surprised patients in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, helping with golf-related art projects and signing autographs. One patient returned the favor, giving the golfer her autograph in exchange.
