The Medical Center is a home site for an international program that teaches intellectually disabled young adults work and life skills that will help them land jobs. Project SEARCH graduates gain life-changing experiences by rotating through a number of Medical Center departments – and some end up working full-time at UMMC.

Gynecological teaching associates are the first women that third-year medical students examine in training. These associates help shape the quality of health care women receive in the future. Recruitment of GTAs is now underway.

From her first encounter with the scars of war in her native country of Vietnam, Phuong Le may have been destined to take care of patients who are often too young to care for themselves. She is now setting out for a career as a pediatrician, motivated and moved as an eyewitness to the suffering of children – and their courage.

One of the highlights of Emily Cole’s job as UMMC’s registrar is to stand on the commencement stage and hand diploma covers to each school’s dean, who presents them to the freshly minted graduates. This year, after earning her DHA in the School of Health Related Professions. Cole will be on the receiving end of the annual graduation “hand-off.”

Jared Cobb harnessed the power of polymers for his PhD research in the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences, studying ways to design new drug delivery technology for humans -- and for honeybees.

The Office of Nursing Quality fetes five outstanding UMMC nurses; the associate dean of advanced practice and partnerships in the SON is elected to a national telehealth committee; and an International dental research association presents its 2021 Kulzer Award to a biomedical sciences-materials sciences PhD student.
