A Batson Children's Hospital patient with the heart and determination of a champion, KJ Fields was recently announced as Mississippi's 2018 Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Champion. Helping to make the proclamation were Miss Mississippi Anne Elizabeth Buys, Mississippi First Lady Deborah Bryant and University of Southern Mississippi mascot Seymour.

Ten years ago, Clint McHann picked up a set of paints on a whim. Now he paints portraits on commission and starts each day with a little watercolor before work. He says his creative “hobby” keeps him grounded.

Surgeons who perform thyroidectomies have to be on the lookout for potential damage to or removal of parathyroid glands that regulate the body's blood calcium levels. A team in the Department of Otolaryngology has developed a protocol to standardize the way physicians detect and treat this issue post-thyroidectomy. Its success has been recognized with an award from a national pathology society.
