Dr. Richard Wardrop joined UMMC in 2019 to serve as Vice Chair for Education. In this role, he oversees all educational activities of the department that involve students, residents and fellows as well as CME opportunities for faculty.
Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Dr. Wardrop attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for his BS, graduating in 1994 summa cum laude, in honors, in biology before graduating from Ohio State University with a PhD in Molecular Virology and Immunology in 2000 and MD cum laude in 2002. He completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics (‘06) and chief residency (‘07) in internal medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.Dr. Wardrop is new to UMMC and is a professor of internal medicine and pediatrics and serves as the Vice Chair of Education and Faculty Development for the Department of Medicine, overseeing all of the educational and faculty development programs in the department.
Before coming to UMMC, Dr. Wardrop was program director for the combined med-peds residency at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine from 2013-17, while achieving a No. 1 national ranking via Doximity in 2017. He also co-led the UNC Academy of Educators from 2015-18 as the president-elect, president, and past president. Throughout his career, he has practiced both inpatient and outpatient general internal medicine and pediatrics and was recognized by the American College of Physicians as one of America’s top 10 hospitalists in 2018. He is involved within the greater medical community, including national leadership positions within the American College of Physicians (ACP), Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Specifically, Dr. Wardrop serves the ACP nationally as a Wellness Champion and active member of the ACP Physician Wellness Task Force participating in ACP’s Wellness Initiatives and strategic planning. He was recently selected as chair of the Council of Early Career Physicians and will also serve on the ACP Board of Regents. Within AAIM, he serves on the AAIM Education Committee and chaired the AAIM Faculty Development Committee from 2015-17 and served on the AAIM GME Funding Task force until 2017. Within the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Wardrop has been a member of the AAP MP Executive Council since 2015-18. He and his wife, Sarah, of 24+ years have three children: Mary, 20, a rising junior at the University of North Carolina; Luke, 16, a rising junior at Germantown High School; and Anna, 11, a rising sixth-grader at Germantown Middle School as well as their faithful dog, Crosby. They live in Madison, MS. Dr. Wardrop is an avid road cyclist and also enjoys non-NASCAR motorsports of all kinds as well as the NFL, NHL, and MLB. Their college sport allegiances are firmly fixed in Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and now UNC, but are keeping an open mind about the role of SEC football and other sports in their lives. They all enjoy hiking, kayaking, and general outdoor pursuits, including birdwatching, astronomy and aerial photography with his drone.
