UMMC’s Mobile Simulation Unit Hits the Road

The Department of Advanced Biomedical Education has taken medical education on the road: literally. Their new mobile simulation unit is a custom-built learning laboratory designed to bring high-quality, hands-on training to communities across the state. Equipped with high-fidelity manikins and advanced simulation equipment, the unit provides realistic medical training to professionals and the public.

So far, it has made a strong impression. At the recent Mississippians for EMS Conference, the unit hosted a Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) themed escape room that challenged teams to respond to simulated emergencies in a race against the clock. The experience provided a fast-paced and immersive way to reinforce trauma skills in a fun setting, while also incorporating a competitive component for the teams. The winning team members were awarded medals and other prizes!

Resuscitation and Training Core instructors Laura Watrous and Matt Fagan run a Trauma Escape Room at the Mississippians for Emergency Medical Services Conference.  The DABE team members welcome the Mobile Simulation Suite with excitement for expanding their reach. From left to right the team members are Andrew Shelby, Deshundra Barnes, Julia Garletts, Patrick Parker, Janeese Knight, Joyce Shelby, Kristina Readman, Jereme King, and Tina Reeves.

The unit has also been used to teach hands-only CPR in local communities, helping everyday Mississippians learn how to respond to cardiac emergencies. That kind of outreach is what the creation team envisioned, aiming to make lifesaving education more accessible, especially in rural areas where training opportunities are limited.

The vehicle is more than just a means of hauling equipment; it is an immersive classroom on wheels designed to meet people where they are. With more stops planned across the state, UMMC’s mobile simulation unit is poised to become a vital part of DABE’s community educational efforts. Next stop, Partnership Middle School Health Fair in Starkville, Mississippi!
