Supporting Every Student: Student Disability Resources at UMMC

At the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), success is for every student. The Office for Academic Engagement offers Student Disability Resources to ensure that all students, regardless of disability, have equal access to UMMC’s academic experiences.

Student Disability Resources works to create a supportive learning environment for UMMC students with verified disabilities as specified under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). Reasonable accommodations are provided to qualified students to remove barriers and promote full participation in academic life.

What Student Disability Resources Offers

Student Disability Resources manages several mechanisms to support students with disabilities. For more information, see the Student Disability Resources webpage.

Academic Accommodations. Students with disabilities can request reasonable accommodations for the academic programs in which they are currently enrolled. Academic accommodations are determined on an individualized and flexible basis by the Accommodations Review Committee and guided by the information the student provided in the documentation and during the interactive meeting.

Parking Accommodations. Student Disability Resources serves as a liaison to the Parking, Traffic, and Transportation Department for students requesting a parking accommodation due to a qualifying disability or medical condition. Once the request and documentation are submitted, Student Disability Resources meets with the student and communicates with Parking, Traffic, and Transportation.

Service Animals. Students with disabilities can be accompanied by working service animals on UMMC’s campus consistent with the provisions of UMMC policy. A service animal is defined as a dog or miniature horse that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a student with a disability.

Getting Started

Students with disabilities seeking accommodations or more information about service animals should begin by reviewing the Student Disability Resources webpage. When requesting academic or parking accommodations, the process involves submitting documentation from a qualified healthcare provider that outlines the functional impact of the disability and the need for accommodations. Once documentation is reviewed, an individual meeting with the student is scheduled to discuss the student’s needs.

Students are encouraged to start the process early—ideally before the semester begins—to allow time for review and coordination. However, students may request accommodations at any time during the academic year.

Collaboration

Each student’s needs are unique. Student Disability Resources is pleased to work closely with students to assist them with accommodations that are effective and appropriate for their specific needs and educational programs. Student Disability Resources also works in partnership with the Accommodations Review Committee and faculty to ensure that accommodations are integrated into academic programs without compromising essential course or program requirements.
