Attracting more minorities and other underrepresented groups to careers in health care has long been a goal at the Medical Center. It is seen as one way to improve access to health care for patients who need it. To that end, organizers of two recent events, and one on the way, reached out to college, high school and middle school students to let them picture their potential futures as doctors, nurses and more. |
| It may be hurricane season, but the Mississippi Center for Emergency Services and AirCare, UMMC’s medical air transport, are ready to be the state’s medical response leaders 365 days a year. Tough lessons learned by UMMC and emergency responders throughout Mississippi have led to the creation of MCES, to a statewide communications system and to much more sophisticated training and proactive planning by UMMC for its role in providing patient care during a disaster or mass casualty event. |
The First, A National Banking Association, announced its $1 million donation during a news conference inside the Kathy and Joe Sanderson Tower at Children's of Mississippi, the $180 million pediatric expansion made possible through such gifts. The Campaign for Children's of Mississippi has raised more than 88 percent of its $100 million goal. | |
| An American Academy of Pediatrics section presents a national Lifetime Contribution to Education in Infectious Diseases Award to a UMMC professor emeritus of pediatrics in recognition of his expertise in training postgraduate physicians, while the Medical Assurance Company of Mississippi bestows its Caldwell Award to an ob-gyn fellow at the Medical Center. |
