Half match, whole hope: state’s first pediatric haploidentical transplant patient free from sickle cell

Kali Mitchell of Flowood is a healthy straight-A student who no longer faces potentially deadly pain crises. Her successful haploidentical bone marrow transplant at UMMC was a cure for her sickle cell disease. The procedure uses a new drug protocol that allows a “half-matched” donation, opening a large pool of potential bone marrow donors to patients.
