COVID Evaluation of Risk for Emergency Departments (COVERED)

About this Study

A prospective cohort study of emergency department (ED) health care personnel to understand the risk of acquiring COVID-19 infection associated with providing ED care during the pandemic. The study will involve enrollment of up to 80 healthcare workers in the UMMC emergency department. Weekly survey forms will be completed by participants inquiring about COVID-19 patient exposures and COVID-19 participant symptoms. Nasal and blood specimens will be collected from participants every two weeks for COVID-19 PCR and antibody testing.

18 years old

Inclusion Criteria
1) UMMC physician;

2) UMMC nurse; or

3) ED clerks, social workers, or case managers, who have no clinical patient contact with COVID-19 patients. 

Exclusion Criteria1) Healthcare Providers (HCPs) unable to complete surveillance follow-up visits (e.g., temporary HCPs); and 

2) HCPs who decline to provide informed consent.

3) HCPs who have previously been diagnosed with COVID-19 or who have positive COVID-19 serology at the beginning of the surveillance period will be invited to participate in an abbreviated project to screen for COVID-19 reinfection.
