It is the policy of UMMC that all affiliated students comply with the mandatory influenza vaccination during the designated vaccination period for influenza season as a condition of engagement on the UMMC campuses. All persons must show proof of influenza vaccinations or, if applicable, be granted accommodations as outlined by the UMMC mandatory influenza vaccination policy and procedure. Influenza season typically is designated as October 1st through March 31st and will include any additional period of time related to appearance of novel strains of influenza. Failure to comply with influenza vaccinations will result in sanctions including denial of engagement on the UMMC campuses.
Medical and religious exemptions must align with UMMC procedures. Medical exemption forms completed by the individual and his/her personal physician or a medical specialist knowledgeable in flu vaccination contraindications must be obtained prior to the engagement at UMMC, reviewed by a committee for recommendations of reasonable accommodations, and kept on file at the affiliated school/program. Valid medical exemptions may include: severe allergy to the vaccination or its components as defined by the most current recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) or history of Guillain-Barre Syndrome within 6 weeks after receipt of prior influenza vaccination. The CDC does not consider pregnancy or lactation a contraindication to vaccination unless high risk status can be certified. Religious accommodation forms based on religious beliefs must be obtained prior to the engagement at UMMC, reviewed by a committee for recommendations of reasonable accommodations, and kept on file at the affiliated school/program. Those with an approved exemption must wear a face mask (N-95 respirator) at all times while on any UMMC campus during influenza season. It is the responsibility of outside institutions to verify vaccination via documentation and to confirm with UMMC supervisors that an affiliated student/instructor with an approved exemption wears a face mask (N-95 respirator) at all times.
The affiliated schools/programs must maintain the documentation of influenza vaccinations for affiliated students and provide it to UMMC when requested during future audits.
