Volunteer Services

University of Mississippi Medical Center volunteers play an important role in helping to provide quality, compassionate care to patients. We are always looking for people who want to help in this mission.Volunteers support UMMC's mission to improve the health of our community.

Whether you are offering a friendly chat and a warm smile to patients or assisting behind the scenes with administrative or technical services in an office or laboratory, you are helping to make every patient's stay more comfortable. We will provide the training and support necessary for your success in all of the volunteer positions.


Volunteers serve many roles, including:

Patient navigator

Volunteers greet newly admitted patients in their rooms to ensure their stay is going smoothly and to present hospital information.


Deliver mail, flowers and visit with patients

Admission ambassadors

Volunteers provide hospital and community information to visitors and escort families to various areas of the hospital

Family liaison services

Volunteers serve as liaisons between staff and families to provide information between waiting rooms, surgery rooms, intensive care units and recovery areas. Many times the volunteer helps to easy family concerns by obtaining information on the status of the patient and their procedure. Volunteers in this area may work in surgical, medical, cardiac and neuroscience, bone marrow transplant and emergency units. 

Nursing desk

Volunteers work with nurses on the inpatient units with duties including typing, filing, copying, assembling packets or mass mailings, answering patient calls bells, and directing patient families.

Patient and family education center

Volunteers interested in advocacy and education are needed in the Patient and Family Education Center. Duties include greeting visitors and helping them access educational materials relating to health issues the family or patient is facing.

Activity director

Volunteers will host a game time, such as bingo on the bone marrow transplant unit.
