The 2024 UMMC Changemakers Gala

On November 1, 2024, we honored two amazing individuals who have helped to shape our institution: Suzan B. Thames and Dr. James E. Keeton. As we reflect on the inaugural Changemakers Gala evening, it reminds us of how two people have the power to bring our community together and create lasting positive change.

It’s also because of our changemakers like Suzan and Dr. Keeton that UMMC can think about tomorrow and what is next. And that’s exactly what we’re doing—our current institutional priority is to improve cancer outcomes in our state.

Mississippi has the highest cancer mortality rates in the nation, and we know all too well the devastation cancer can have on our families, friends and loved ones. UMMC has a vision that all Mississippians can receive the cancer treatment they need without leaving the state, so we are building a state-of-the-art facility to house research and advanced care under one roof. Our changemakers create hope, make our dreams a reality, and enable UMMC to ensure a healthier Mississippi. Suzan and Dr. Keeton are models for demonstrating that when we work together, we can make a meaningful impact that extends far beyond the borders of our state and far beyond our lifetimes. We are extremely indebted to them for all that they have helped UMMC to accomplish! 

Honoring our Changemakers

Suzan B. Thames

Suzan earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Mississippi and a master’s degree in speech pathology and audiology from Tulane University. She completed a university fellowship in behavioral disabilities from the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. James E. Keeton

Dr. Keeton served as UMMC’s vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine from July 2009 to February 2015. He retired in January 2017, holding emeritus status in these roles and as professor of surgery and pediatrics.
