Treasurer hands UMMC ‘closed account’ funds

Ross to discuss unconscious bias

Howard RossHoward Ross, founder and chief learning officer of Cook Ross, Inc., will present "Unconscious Bias - The Elephant in the Room," from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, in the second-floor conference center of the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

The presentation will address how unconscious bias develops, how it impacts people and diversity efforts, and how it impacts the creation of successful cultural change. The seminar is presented by the Division of Multicultural Affairs.

Godwin to present Anesthesia Grand Rounds

GodwinDr. Steven A. Godwin, professor and chair of emergency medicine and assistant dean of simulation education at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Jacksonville, will give the Anesthesia Grand Rounds presentation, "Where Do We Go from Here? Utilizing Simulation to Advance Patient Safety Training in GME," at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, in classroom 3A.

Fuqua to present Hearin Distinguished Lecture

fuquaDr. Suzanne A. W. Fuqua, professor of medicine and molecular cell biology at the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, Baylor College of Medicine, and co-director of the Nuclear Receptor Program at the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, will give the Robert M. Hearin Distinguished Lecture, "Novel Mechanisms of Hormone Resistance," from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, in room R354 (upper amphitheatre).

All Medical Center faculty, staff and students are invited. Lunch will be available on a first-come basis by the Hearin Foundation.

Reading project to discuss Fadiman book

Book TaylorThe Division of Multicultural Affairs, the School of Medicine Student Affairs Office, the School of Medicine Academic Affairs Office and the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities will sponsor a Diversity Dialogue Session, "UMMC Common Reading Project: The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down," at noon on Friday, Jan. 25, in room R153 (lower amphitheatre).

The format will include an interactive discussion with experts on pertinent topics in medical ethics. Participants should read the selected book by Anne Fadiman before the event.

Vasdev to give anesthesia presentation

VasdevDr. Gurinder Vasdev, assistant professor of anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., will give the Anesthesia Grand Rounds presentation, "The Nuts and Bolts of Liver Transplant Anesthesia," at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30, in classroom 3A.
