A $10,000 donation from Entergy Mississippi will allow the Center for Telehealth at the University of Mississippi Medical Center to launch a mental health care program for the McComb school district.

UMMC TelePsychiatry will increase mental health care accessibility by providing a virtual school clinic that allows mental health specialists to deliver quality care that enhances local capabilities, said Michael Adcock, the Center’s executive director. This method of delivery -- two-way, online video connecting a student with a UMMC licensed mental health provider -- provides the opportunity to limit patient financial burden due to travel in search for services.

“Access to behavioral health services is a challenge within itself,” said Tearsanee Davis the Center’s director of clinical and advanced practice operations. “Through this project, we hope to support the school nurse as they work with parents and school leaders to meet the needs of the students,” Davis said.  “We are so honored that Entergy believed in the vision of such a project and has provided this much-needed support.”

Increased access to psychiatric care will also lead to earlier involvement and management of student conditions and can prevent a much more serious intervention at a later date, Adcock said.

“We’re happy to support UMMC’s innovative strategies that expand the availability of health services to students, while minimizing time out of the classroom and impact on academic performance,” said Haley Fisackerly, Entergy Mississippi president and CEO.
