Here are answers to commonly asked questions about our facilities. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, please call the general information desk at (601) 984-1000. You can also visit the main information desk in the University Hospital lobby from 6 a.m.–6 p.m., Monday–Friday, and 7 a.m.–9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

Is free parking available?

Is smoking allowed?

Smoking and the use of tobacco products are not allowed in UMMC facilities or anywhere on the UMMC campus, including inside parking garages.

Is security provided on the UMMC campus?

UMMC is committed to providing safe and secure facilities for patients and visitors. UMMC Police and Public Safety Department protection is available 24 hours a day, and emergency stations are located at various locations across campus and in the stadium parking lot. Hospital doors are closed from 9 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. A visitor’s pass (obtained from the patient’s nursing staff) and photo ID are required for after-hours admittance.

Are interpreter services available?

Yes, UMMC internally offers Spanish interpreters/translators and a Choctaw liaison from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

We also provide the language line which offers 24/7 access to:

  • Over 200 languages
  • Sign language interpreters for our hearing-impaired patients
  • Certified translation services through our contracted vendor

Special arrangements can be made for use of a TTD, materials in Braille, communication boards, eyeglasses, etc.

If possible, please let our staff know you will need an interpreter when you make your appointment, or contact the Office of Patient Experience at (601) 815-4545.

Where can I find area lodging?

A variety of hotels, motels, inns, and other lodging options are available in the metro Jackson area. Some hotels in the area offer discounts to UMMC and Children's of Mississippi patients and their families. Please be sure and ask about any special offers when you make reservations.

How can I contact a patient?

If you are on campus, our information desks can connect you to a patient’s room or provide room information. They can also provide telephone numbers for special waiting rooms.

How can I send a card to a patient?

UMMC has a post office located on the basement level of the hospital. The post office provides mail delivery to patients Monday through Friday.

Patients and visitors can send outgoing mail, too. The postal service window is open 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The post office accepts checks or cash only for purchase of a book of stamps, roll of stamps, pre-stamped envelope, or mailing of packages.
No single first class stamps are sold.

Are ATMs available?

Several ATMs are located in UMMC facilities. ATM affiliations include Trustmark, Regions, BancorpSouth, and Mississippi Federal Credit Union. Mississippi Federal Credit Union also has a branch (with drive-through window and ATM) on campus. 

Moneygrams and Western Union can be purchased within close proximity to the campus.

Can I use my cell phone inside the hospital? Are there phones in the rooms?

Cell phones may be used except where specifically prohibited. Patient rooms have phones (local calls are free), and public telephones are available in various locations in the hospitals.

How do I get copies of my medical records?

Can I get a prescription filled or refilled?

Patients can refill or renew a prescription through MyChart or by phone at one of our three locations. Only prescriptions written by a UP provider can be filled at these locations.

Where can I find a book or magazine?

Our gift shops and a student bookstore have magazines and paperback books for sale. UMMC also provides magazines for patients and their families in our Volunteer Services office, open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

What if I’m a smoker?

Smoking and the use of tobacco products are not allowed in UMMC facilities or anywhere on the UMMC campus. You may be eligible for tobacco replacement therapy (nicotine patches) during your hospital stay, so check with your doctor or nurse.

Is there a worship area?

Yes, there are interfaith chapels. Chaplains are also available at a patient's request. Please visit our Spiritual Services page for details.

Does the hospital have wireless internet? Can I bring a laptop computer?

Free public wireless internet is available for patients and visitors with laptops and mobile devices. UMMC is not responsible for lost or stolen personal belongings left unattended.

Can my visitor eat with me?

Meals are delivered to patients' rooms three times a day, according to dietary needs. To have an additional tray delivered to a patient's room, guests may purchase meal tickets at the main cafeteria. A variety of dining choices are also available off-campus.
